How God Talks to Us Through Dreams

God talks. He talks all the time. Even when you think He is silent, He speaks. And one of the most powerful and mysterious ways God communicates with His children is through dreams. Throughout Scripture, we see countless examples of God revealing Himself and His divine plans through dreams. From Jacob’s ladder to Joseph’s prophetic visions, biblical dreams have changed the course of history. The story of Joseph is particularly remarkable, his God-given ability to interpret dreams not only saved his life but also preserved an entire nation from devastating famine.

God is infinitely creative. If He can speak through a burning bush and a donkey, He can certainly speak through your dreams. The question is: Are you paying attention? The dreams God sends you might contain the answers you have been desperately seeking.

Understanding the Three Types of Dreams

Not all dreams carry spiritual significance. To hear God clearly, you must first learn to distinguish between different types of dreams.

Here are the three most common dreams people experience:

1. Natural Dreams from Your Subconscious Mind

These are ordinary dreams that reflect your daily experiences, stress, thoughts, and memories. They are essentially your brain processing information from your waking hours. Here are some characteristics of dreams that humans see on a daily basis and they often have little to no significance:

  • Often jumbled and confusing.
  • Lacks coherent meaning or message.
  • Quickly forgotten after waking.
  • Connected to recent events or worries.

These dreams are simply part of our natural human experience. As Ecclesiastes 5:3 suggests, “A dream comes when there are many cares.” They don’t require spiritual interpretation. If you can’t remember the dream shortly after waking, it likely wasn’t from God. Divine dreams usually leave a lasting impression after you wake up. They often linger in your spirit for days, months, and even years.

2. Demonic Dreams and Spiritual Attacks

These are nightmares and terrifying dreams sent by the enemy to torment, frighten, and discourage believers.

Here are some warning signs of demonic dreams:

  • Sleep paralysis episodes.
  • Vivid encounters with demons or evil entities.
  • Physical attacks or sensations of being choked.
  • Overwhelming fear and dread.
  • Recurring nightmares with similar themes.
  • Feelings of oppression upon waking.

What invites demonic dreams?

Scripture warns us to guard our minds (Philippians 4:8). Certain activities can create spiritual openings:

  • Involvement in occult practices or witchcraft.
  • Consuming dark media (horror movies, violent content).
  • Listening to music with ungodly messages.
  • Unconfessed habitual sin.
  • Generational curses from family history.

How to fight spiritual attacks in dreams?

The blood of Jesus Christ is your ultimate protection. When experiencing a spiritual attack in your dream call on the name of Jesus. His name has power over every demonic force. Pray Scripture and claim your authority because you are a child of God. Be persistent because sometimes deliverance requires continued prayer.

It is important to note that if you experience frequent nightmares, ask God to reveal any doors you may have opened to the enemy.

Prolonged spiritual attacks often indicate:

  • Hidden sin that needs confession.
  • Need for sanctification (pay attention to what you are allowing into your life).
  • Generational bondage requires a breakthrough.
  • Spiritual warfare over your calling (especially if God is calling you to step into a new territory).

When I surrendered my life to Christ at age 11, I endured years of spiritual attacks in my dreams. The nightmare persisted regardless of how much I tried to rebuke the devil for attacking me. Coming from a Muslim family with a history of witchcraft gave the enemy legal authority to torment me in my sleep for years. But as a child of God, covered by the blood of Jesus, those attacks eventually stopped. Although, the journey was long, the Lord was faithful and He sanctified me through those experiences. We must never forget that the blood of Jesus cleanses our lineage and breaks generational curses. Sometimes the road is long because God knows that’s what it takes to save us from ourselves.

3. Dreams from God: Divine Revelation

These are supernatural communications from the Holy Spirit, carrying divine messages, warnings, encouragement, or revelation.

Here are some Biblical examples:

How God speaks through dreams?

God uses various methods to communicate in dreams:

  1. Symbolic dreams – Like parables, using metaphors and allegories.
  2. Direct messages – Clear instructions or words.
  3. Prophetic dreams – Revealing future events.
  4. Heavenly visions – Showing spiritual realities beyond this world.

Characteristics of dreams from God:

  • Memorable – You can’t forget them; they stay vivid in your mind.
  • Peace-filled – They bring peace, even if the message is challenging.
  • Clear purpose – There’s a discernible reason for the dream.
  • Refreshing – You wake feeling encouraged and spiritually strengthened.
  • Aligned with Scripture – They never contradict God’s Word.

Why God sends dreams?

  1. To guide decisions you are facing.
  2. To warn you of danger or spiritual threats.
  3. To encourage you during difficult seasons.
  4. To reveal His will for your life.
  5. To reveal traumas that God wants to heal.
  6. To show you spiritual realities. Sometimes God takes your spirit to heavenly places to remind you that Earth is not your final home. As believers, we don’t truly die, we die to live eternally (John 11:25-26).

How to Discern If Your Dream Is from God

1. Peace

How do you feel after the dream?

Dreams from God bring His peace, even when delivering correction. If you wake in fear, confusion, or spiritual oppression, the dream likely isn’t from God (2 Timothy 1:7).

2. Memory

Can you remember the dream clearly?

Divine dreams remain vivid in your mind long after waking. If the dream quickly fades, it’s probably not a message from God.

3. Clarity

Does the dream have purpose, even if symbolic?

While God may use symbols requiring interpretation, His dreams always have discernible meaning. If the dream is completely confusing and you don’t have any clarity, the dream might not be divine.

4. Relevance

Does it connect to your current life situation?

God’s dreams typically address specific situations you’re facing, such as relationships, decisions, spiritual growth, or your calling. Pay attention to timing and context.

5. Scripture

Does it align with biblical truth?

God never contradicts His written Word. Any dream that goes against Scripture is not from God (2 Timothy 3:16).

What to Do with Dreams from God

1. Write It Down

Keep a journal by your bed. Record every detail you remember:

  • Date and time.
  • People, places, colors, numbers.
  • Emotions you felt.
  • Symbols or unusual elements.
  • Words spoken.
2. Pray for Interpretation

Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the meaning:

  • “Lord, what are You saying to me?”
  • “Show me the interpretation of this dream.”
  • “Give me wisdom to understand Your message.”
  • “What would You like me to do with this message?”
3. Search Scripture

Look for biblical parallels to symbols in your dream. God often uses consistent symbolism throughout the Bible:

  • Water = Holy Spirit, cleansing, the Word.
  • Mountains = obstacles, kingdoms, challenges.
  • Fire = purification, God’s presence, testing.
  • Animals = people, characteristics, spiritual forces.
4. Seek Godly Counsel

Share your dream with spiritually mature believers, your spiritual leaders that you trust or someone who might have the gift of interpretation. Proverbs 11:14 says, “Where there is no counsel, the people fall; but in the multitude of counselors there is safety.”

5. Test the Dream Over Time

Be patient. Some dreams reveal their meaning gradually as circumstances in your unfold. Don’t make hasty decisions based on a single dream. Let the Lord reveal His plans for your life slowly according to His divine timing.

6. Obey What God Reveals

Once you understand God’s message, act on it. James 1:22 reminds us to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.” If the Lord reveals to you that you have unresolved traumas, ask Him for healing. If the dream reveals that you need to repent of a sin, work on it right away. If the dream points you to mend relationships in your life (friends or family), work on reconciling those relationships. When God gives you a dream that calls for action, be quick to obey and take care of it without delay.

Developing Your Ability to Hear God Through Dreams

Like any spiritual gift, discerning divine dreams improves with practice and spiritual maturity.

Keys to growth:

  1. Cultivate intimacy with God. The closer your relationship, the clearer His voice.
  2. Study biblical dream interpretation. Learn from Joseph, Daniel, and other biblical interpreters.
  3. Keep a dream journal. Track patterns and recurring themes.
  4. Learn God’s symbolic language. He often uses consistent imagery.
  5. Practice discernment. The more dreams you analyze, the easier interpretation becomes.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Don’t:

  • Obsess over every dream.
  • Make major decisions based solely on dreams without confirmation.
  • Ignore the practical wisdom of Scripture.
  • Become superstitious or fearful.
  • Share sacred dreams with everyone (some are private between you and God).
  • Interpret dreams for others without clear gifting and God’s leading.
  • Use dreams to manipulate or control others.

Remember, dreams are one way God speaks, but not the only way. If you never see dreams from God or you don’t usually see dreams, that is perfectly fine. God knows how to talk to each person individually based on their personality and spiritual gifting. The Church is the Body of Christ, and every member has a unique and a specific purpose (Romans 12:4-5).

Are You Listening When God Speaks?

The question isn’t whether God talks, but whether you are listening. Dreams are one of His many communication channels, a gift available to every believer through the Holy Spirit. If the Lord is trying to communicate to you through a dream, do not ignore it. Pay attention to your dreams, journal them, and pray over them. Learn to distinguish between the mundane, the demonic, and the divine.

Remember Joseph, his ability to hear God through dreams positioned him to save nations. Your dreams might be the key to your breakthrough or someone else’s deliverance.

Stay spiritually alert. Guard your heart and mind. Develop intimacy with God. And when He speaks through your dreams, listen carefully and obey faithfully.

Pay attention to your dreams because they might be the key to changing your life forever.
